Frequently asked questions about hosting a wedding or celebration
Tours and Booking
How can I view the space? Do you book tours?
Yes, wedding tours are booked by appointment via email. You can also view photos of past events at Wedding Wire. Please also visit our dedicated Weddings Instagram account: @rougeweddingyyc – be sure to also check out the tagged photos!
Can I do a tour while you’re setting up for another wedding?
Unfortunately, no. Weddings are booked as a private event and we want to keep every couple’s day special for them.
Can we place a hold on the date we want to book?
Dates are only held with a full deposit, along with a signed contract and terms & conditions. Paperwork and the deposit can be completed either in person or over the telephone and email, with payment made by credit card.
A printer and scanner may be required if documents need to be sent back electronically.
What is the deposit due for booking?
The deposit is calculated at 30% of the minimum guaranteed sales for the date and space booked.
What is Rouge’s cancellation policy?
Deposits are fully refunded if cancellation is made more than six months before the date of your event. If cancellation occurs more than 30 days prior to your event, 50% of your deposit will be returned. Cancellations made within 30 days of your event are non-refundable.
How do I book the garden and patio for my event?
Garden and patio access is available only with a Whole House booking on Saturdays or Sundays during High Season. A Whole House or Main Floor booking is required to reserve these spaces.
Do you book more than one wedding on the same day?
We only book one wedding per day. However, depending on the type of booking (Whole House vs. Main Floor), other private events may still take place in the venue at the same time.
Is there a venue rental fee on top of the Minimum Required Spend for Food & Beverages?
There is a $500 fee for use of the tented patio, which seats up to 116 guests. For parties between 116 and 150 guests, an additional tent extension is required. Rouge obtains a new quote for this extension each year as prices can fluctuate.
Is there a Ceremony Fee to use the space in the garden? How many can be seated here?
There is no ceremony fee with a Main Floor or Whole House booking. For all other ceremony bookings, the fee is $500.
Can I book the Garden only for a Ceremony and hold my reception elsewhere?
Garden-only ceremony bookings are available only a few months in advance, not a year ahead. If the date is not already reserved for another wedding, the fee is $2,000 (plus tax, service charge included). The garden can seat up to 130 guests for a ceremony.
Are there any other mandatory costs associated with booking my wedding at Rouge?
Aside from tent rental, chair rental is mandatory for ceremony and/or dinner, depending on which room(s) or floor(s) of the house are being booked. Rouge has folding, white-resin, padded chairs for rental at $5 each.
I would like to specify the type of chairs. Where do I rent these from?
Our preferred rental company for all items is Modern Rentals. They have a fantastic selection of chairs from Chiavari to vintage-style cross-back on their website. We can put together an order for you in advance of your event (at least four weeks) and we will pass along our 15% industry discount to you.
Event Timing and Schedule
What times can I book for my wedding?
A lunch event begins no earlier than 10:00am, and a dinner event begins no earlier than 4:00pm. Access to the Bridal Suite is available starting at 11:00am. Earlier start times may be possible, but additional labour charges will apply. The décor team may arrive between 1:00pm and 2:00pm to set up.
What timeline does the event follow for an all-in-one Wedding?
For a Wedding Dinner, the Ceremony may begin at:
- 4:00pm, 4:30pm, or 5:00pm
Cocktail Hour follows for one to one-and-a-half hours. Sparkling wine or Champagne toast are both options, served directly after the ceremony concludes. - Seated Dinner follows, usually after a welcome speech or toast. Rouge servers will pour wine and take all guest orders at the table. Dinner generally lasts approximately two hours, give or take, to allow for speeches.
- Dessert is served either seated or at a dedicated assortment station.
- Cake Cutting occurs upon a tall standing cocktail table, if desired. This typically occurs before dessert is served, as you wish.
- First Dance may take place on the patio, after a few tables are removed, usually around 9:00pm.
- Music and Dancing unfortunately, must move inside the house at 10:00pm, though guests are welcome to remain seated on the patio until closer to close.
- Last Call can be as late as 1:30am, with guests exiting by 2:00am, though many couples request an earlier time.
What time do all the guests have to leave by, and what time do we have to remove our décor?
For a lunch event, all guests must exit by 3:00pm – 4:00pm. For a dinner event, all drinks must be finished and guests must exit by 2:00am. Décor items must be removed from the restaurant by 3:45pm for a lunch event and by 2:00am for a dinner event.
Many couples choose to have their team pack up earlier. Décor may be stored in our garage for up to 72 hours.
Tables, Seating and Furniture
Does Rouge provide table linens?
Yes. Linens are standard and included with every booking. We offer our House cream tablecloths, or pure white tablecloths (special order, no extra charge). Pure white is ideal for weddings with a white gown or bright-coloured flowers (reds, oranges).
House cream is more forgiving for other shades of white or cream gowns and a variety of flower colours. White Cotton Frette napkins are also provided.
Does Rouge provide table and bar ware for our event?
Yes. Rouge provides all cutlery, glassware, plates, bar supplies and staffing for up to 116 guests.
Please note that events with more than 116 guests are subject to additional rental fees for china, glassware, flatware, etc., as well as a glassware breakage fee.
Décor
What décor does Rouge provide? Will you set up my décor and place cards if I drop them off?
All décor items are the responsibility of the booking party; Rouge staff do not set up décor. We provide tealight holders only. All décor must be set up and removed on the day of the event by the booking party’s team.
We recommend asking a cousin or friend who will attend the wedding to assist, as most florists will set up flowers for you. While not required, we suggest designing a seating plan and having your décor team place items accordingly. Assigned seating helps reduce setup time after the cocktail hour.
What time can we do décor?
For PM bookings, ceremony and arch décor — if applicable — may start at 11:30pm. Table décor can be started at 1:00pm. For AM bookings, the timing will be discussed with your coordinator.
When can I drop off our décor items?
For most bookings, drop-off can be arranged the day before the wedding. We have space in our garage to store décor items.
What are the restrictions on décor we can bring?
No confetti, moss, grains or seeds, glitter, sequins, beads, balloons, popcorn, sparklers, or fireworks may be used or distributed in the house, tented area, or on the grounds of Rouge Restaurant. No adhesives, tacks, paint, or markers may be applied to the walls of the house or tent. Nothing may be hung from the walls, tent, lights, or plants on the property. A $250 charge will be applied to the final bill for each occurrence.
Can we use live flame candles?
Yes, you may use live flame candles, provided they comply with the Alberta Fire Code. Specifically, all candles must be contained in a flame-proof holder, and no flame shall come within two centimetres of the container opening.
Sparklers, fireworks, and flares are not permitted in the house, tent, or anywhere on the grounds of Rouge Restaurant.
Menu and Catering
When do we pick out our Menu?
All food and beverage choices should be chosen within 4-6 weeks of the event date.
Do I need to email the menu to guests so they can choose their options ahead of time?
No — your guests will order at the table. We check for allergies and take each guest’s order directly at the table. If you are able to collect a list of dietary allergies in advance, that is very helpful.
Can we bring our pet to the ceremony or the wedding?
No. Only licensed service animals are permitted on restaurant property. This policy aligns with Alberta’s Food Regulation (AR 31/2006), which prohibits animals in establishments where food is prepared, stored, or offered for sale, with the exception of service animals as defined by the law.
Alberta Health Services
Please note that emotional support animals and pets do not have the same legal rights as service dogs and are not permitted on the premises. For more information on service dog rights and responsibilities, please refer to the Alberta Government’s guidelines.
Can we bring our own wine and alcohol?
No. All wine and beverages must be supplied by Rouge. Under the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act, Section 89(1), no person may use or consume liquor in a public place or any place other than a residence, temporary residence, licensed premises, or any other place as prescribed in the regulations where liquor may be used or consumed. As per: City of Calgary.
Rouge Calgary holds a valid liquor license that authorizes the service of alcohol on the premises. This license does not permit guests to bring their own alcohol onto the property. For more information on liquor regulations and licensing, please refer to the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission’s guidelines.
Can we bring our own Desserts?
Rouge’s outside food policy is as follows: no outside food or beverages shall be brought onto the property, with the exception of ceremonial desserts or a wedding cake.
A $5 per person charge will be added to the final bill if an outside ceremonial dessert or wedding cake is served exclusively in place of a purchased dessert course. If an outside dessert is served in addition to a purchased dessert, there is no charge.
Do rental items count toward the Minimum Spend?
No, only Food and Beverage costs count toward the minimum spend.
Can we have a cash bar or a toonie bar for the guests at the wedding?
If your host bill meets the Minimum Spend Requirement for Food & Beverages, including food totals and wine served with dinner, we can provide either a cash bar or a $5 subsidized bar. Guests may start a tab or pay with cash, credit cards, or Interac.
Toonie bars can also be accommodated if you supply drink tickets to be sold at the bar.
Entertainment
Can we hire a DJ and/or live musicians?
Yes! This makes the day flow much better and adds fantastic ambiance. We’re also part of Music Mile so it would be very appropriate.
Can we set up a slideshow during dinner on the tented patio?
Unfortunately, the tented patio is not suitable for a slideshow during weddings. It is too bright outside for a projector to be effective and there isn’t enough space in the tent to set one up in and amongst guests and dining tables.
While we do host corporate or private dinners with slideshow presentations, these always take place in one of our indoor rooms where lighting can be controlled and curtains closed.
For weddings, the only option for a projector slideshow during the summer is in a Main Floor room of the house. If projected indoors, the slideshow would run on a loop for guests to view as they come and go. We have an LCD projector available for rent at $50. Some couples also choose to use their iPad for a similar setup.
Ceremony and Rehearsals
Can we hold our Ceremony Rehearsal at Rouge, and how much do you charge?
Yes, Rouge allows rehearsals at no charge. We prefer to host rehearsals the day before the wedding. If the day before is unavailable due to another event or wedding, we will schedule the rehearsal two days prior.
Rehearsals must take place between 3:00pm and 4:00pm.
Only those participating in the ceremony should attend the rehearsal, including mothers, fathers, the wedding party, flower girl and ring bearer(s). If you have live musicians hired for the ceremony, they should also attend.
If you have a DJ or are using a rented sound system, please bring a portable Bluetooth speaker to play the song(s) for the wedding party’s entrance. Your officiant may attend the rehearsal, but it is not required.
We provide a water station for you and your party. If you would like guests to have other beverages during the rehearsal, those charges will be added to the wedding bill the following day.
What happens to our Garden Ceremony if it rains?
We always discuss Plan A and Plan B options ahead of time. Most couples choose the Tented Patio as Plan B for their ceremony in case of rain or inclement weather. The final decision is made the morning of the wedding, if necessary.
For a Plan B ceremony, guests are seated at the long dining tables, with chairs oriented toward the open garden side of the tent. The bridal party will walk to the ceremony through the house instead of the backyard to stay dry. Cocktail hour afterward will take place in the house.
The final decision on whether to proceed with Plan A or Plan B rests with Rouge Management.
Pets and Parking
Can we bring our pet to the ceremony or the wedding?
No. Only licensed service animals are permitted on restaurant property. This policy aligns with Alberta’s Food Regulation (AR 31/2006), which prohibits animals in establishments where food is prepared, stored, or offered for sale, with the exception of service animals as defined by the law.
Alberta Health Services
Please note that emotional support animals and pets do not have the same legal rights as service dogs and are not permitted on the premises. For more information on service dog rights and responsibilities, please refer to the Alberta Government’s guidelines.
