Our Philosophy

At Rouge, the foundation of our food begins with the best ingredients. We partner with local food growers and utilize our onsite garden and our homegrown produce. Preparing these quality ingredients with respect and expertise gives our cuisine its regional flavour. You can almost taste the terroir. We complement our menu with a carefully chosen wine selection showcasing some of the finest varietals available today, constantly recognized by Wine Spectator Magazine with the Award of Excellence. Above all, our goal is to provide an exceptional dining experience with our welcoming attitude and professional service.

About the House

Built in 1891 by A.E. Cross in the heart of what is now Inglewood, the Brewery House was home to the Cross family for decades. It was donated to the City of Calgary, and designated as a Municipal and Provincial Heritage Site in 1973. Originally from Montreal, Cross founded the A7 Ranch in Nanton in what was then the North West Territories. Within a few years of his arrival, Cross became one of the West’s most prominent cattlemen. In 1892 he founded the Calgary Brewing and Malting Co., the first brewing company in western Canada. In 1899 he was elected Conservative MLA for the NWT. Cross was one of the city’s “Big Four”, contributing a quarter share in founding the first Calgary Stampede in 1912.

Formerly known as East Calgary, Inglewood bears the distinction of being Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood, having been established adjacent to Fort Calgary in 1875. 9th Avenue South East, formerly named Atlantic Avenue, became the Calgary’s first authentic main street. Today, Inglewood is a vibrant, eclectic and ever-evolving arts and culture district with more than one hundred shops, boutiques and eateries attracting locals and tourists alike. Less than a ten-minute drive from Calgary city center, Rouge provides convenient commutes from many of Calgary’s central hotels. We offer ample free parking and are directly adjacent the Bow River and a large community green space, creating a multiple-use venue for all of your weddings, corporate gatherings and events.

The Owners

Our very personable owners Olivier Reynaud and Chef Paul Rogalski met in the mid-90s. They discovered mutual respect for each other’s professional abilities and experience, and a common dream of using their vast restaurant experience to create their own fine dining establishment in Calgary. The dream was for a restaurant that would showcase the best cuisine and service that Calgary had ever experienced by tapping into their cumulative 38 years of international experience and provide them with the opportunity to be really chatty with their patrons!

Olivier and Paul have independently cultivated their skills and culinary perspective in nine different countries. They knew if they could take the best in service and food preparation from their experiences, they could dazzle patrons, food critics and food writers, alike. They have. In May of 2001 Olivier and Paul combined their tremendous experience to create The Cross House Restaurant, and in April 2003 introduced us to ROUGE – At The Cross House.

Since the formation of their partnership, they have enjoyed outstanding reviews. It’s more than just the critics who are taking notice, though. Calgarians are making ROUGE a part of their Calgary culinary scene.
